Summary note
This book was published on the occasion of the exhibition Friends and Relations: Lucian Freud, Francis Bacon, Frank Auerbach, Michael Andrews at Gagosian, Grosvenor Hill, London. Curated by art historian Richard Calvocoressi, Friends and Relations presented over forty key paintings by these four era-defining artists. With a focus on portraiture of friends, lovers, and family members, the exhibition elucidated the connections between their respective practices, and also featured some of the artists' portraits of each other. The fully illustrated catalogue contextualizes the work of these artists with notes on each plate and photography of the installation. It includes a foreword by Larry Gagosian, an introduction by Calvocoressi, and the essays "Interrelations and Family Resemblances" by Martin Gayford and "Life as Material: Painting in Postwar London" by Florence Hallett. The volume also features interviews with Bella Freud and Jake Auerbach by Harry Thorne that reveal aspects of their fathers' family relationships and studio practices and with Frank Auerbach by Richard Calvocoressi that offers reflections on his work and the milieu shared by the four artists. Exhibition: Gagosian Gallery, London, UK (17.11.2022 - 28.01.2023).
