Established by William T. Williams and including Melvin Edwards, Guy Ciarcia, and Billy Rose, Smokehouse grew to encompass a range of creative practitioners united around the revolutionary potential of public art. Though relatively unknown today, Smokehouse was ambitious in its scale, community engagement, and interaction with the built environment. Published over fifty years after the collective's founding, Smokehouse Associates offers the first critical examination of the group's work. Eric Booker provides a historical overview of the collective; Charles Davis II and James Trainor delve into contextual histories of public art, urban design, and architecture; and an artist roundtable moderated by Ashley James presents critical reflections. With previously unpublished images and ephemera and a rich chronology, Smokehouse Associates serves as a sourcebook that expands the narrative of public art and social practice in the United States to include the contributions of artists of African descent. 610 20 Smokehouse Associates |xCriticism and interpretation. 650 0 African American art |zNew York (State) |zNew York |y20th century. 650 0 Public art |zNew York (State) |zNew York |y20th century. 650 0 African American artists |zNew York (State) |zNew York. 650 0 Art and society. 600 10 Williams, William T. |q(William Thomas), |d1942- |vInterviews. 600 10 Edwards, Melvin, |d1937- |vInterviews. 600 10 Ciarcia, Guy |vInterviews. 650 7 African American art. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst00799012 650 7 African American artists. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst00799017 650 7 Art and society. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst00815432 650 7 Public art. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01082064 651 7 New York (State) |zNew York. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01204333 650 7 ART / American / African American & Black. |2bisacsh 648 7 1900-1999 |2fast 655 7 Criticism, interpretation, etc. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01411635 700 1 Booker, Eric, |eeditor, |econtributor. 700 1 Davis, Charles L., |cII, |econtributor. 700 1 Trainor, James, |econtributor. 700 1 James, Ashley |q(Ashley Nicole), |einterviewer. 902 000088300 |wcopy |120230215083257.0 914 (OCoLC)on1309868119 |bOCoLC |cmatch |d20240501 |eprocessed |f1309868119 980 221221 |e49.50 |f331080
