Understanding the nuances and evolution of the term private honour as it is represented in Sidney's artefacts, as well as in the public discourse of the era, is the work and contribution of this book. The permeability between the private and public spheres led to an emergence of new forms of masculine representation. In a time when manhood was intertwined with militaristic qualities (such as courage, strength and fortitude), my investigation shows that in the domestic sphere, a gentler version of masculinity, encouraging humility, constancy and modesty, was fostered amongst the nobility. While worries of effeminacy certainly existed, there also was a strong discourse that encourage men to adopt so-called feminine virtues within the private sphere"-- |cProvided by publisher. 600 10 Sidney, Robert, |d1563-1626. 650 0 Poets, English |yEarly modern, 1500-1700 |vBiography. 650 0 English poetry |yEarly modern, 1500-1700 |xHistory and criticism. 650 0 Masculinity in literature. 650 0 Honor in literature. 650 0 Masculinity |zEngland |xHistory. 650 0 Honor |zEngland |xHistory. 651 0 England |xSocial life and customs |y16th century. 651 0 England |xSocial life and customs |y17th century. 600 17 Sidney, Robert, |d1563-1626. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst00113575 650 7 English poetry |xEarly modern. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01710963 650 7 Honor. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst00960005 650 7 Honor in literature. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst00960014 650 7 Manners and customs. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01007815 650 7 Masculinity. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01011027 650 7 Masculinity in literature. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01011040 650 7 Poets, English |xEarly modern |xBiography. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01711489 651 7 England. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01219920 648 7 1500-1700 |2fast 655 7 Criticism, interpretation, etc. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01411635 655 7 History. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01411628 776 08 |iOnline version:D'Souza, Erika. |tPrivate honour and noble masculine image in early modern England |dNew York, NY : Routledge, 2023 |z9781003261179 |w(DLC) 2022021174 830 0 Routledge studies in Renaissance literature and culture 903 24 910 |cG0601mon |d3110-07 |gYBP |h579852 914 (OCoLC)on1341210616 |bOCoLC |cmatch |d20230407 |eprocessed |f1341210616 980 17925933 |i160.00 |j131.20 |n40031545886 982 |cf |q32101118501301
