Summary note

A memorial for the Jews of Gniewoszów, situated in the heart of the Kielce district in Poland. Before the war the Jewish community consisted of 1,580 people. Their fate in the Holocaust is recounted on pp. 273-508 in Hebrew and in Yiddish. Pp. 511-525 list the names of the Holocaust victims. The Germans entered Gniewoszów in September 1939 and a ghetto was established the following year. The number of Jews in Gniewoszów kept growing (reaching 2,987 in October 1941) due to the transfer there of refugees from neighboring towns in preparation for deportation. By August 1942, when the ghetto was liquidated, 6,580 Jews had been amassed in Gniewoszów. With the liquidation, 600 were sent to Dęblin and 5,000 to Zwolen, and in November 1,000 Jews were deported to Treblinka. During fall 1942, those who had been transferred to Zwolen and Dęblin were also deported and killed.
