Summary note
Fictionalized memoirs of an Orthodox Jewish woman from Panevežys, Lithuania, born in 1912, who was a writer and teacher in Telšiai and Kovno. Levin married in 1938 and gave birth to a son in December 1939; her husband was killed by the Germans in 1941. Describes the German occupation of Telšiai and the massacres which followed, as well as life in the ghetto and Levin's escape before its liquidation. She hid her son, Yosef Arieh, with a priest, and after hiding in many villages, arrived at the Šiauliai ghetto. Describes conditions in the ghetto - forced labor, sickness, murders - and her escape before its destruction. She hid in forests and on farms until the liberation, and then reclaimed her son. The story ends with emigration to Palestine; however, Levin actually died of tuberculosis in a Jewish hospital in Munich in 1946. She wrote this book before she died, and asked in her will that it be published.
