The kidnapping of Nazi war criminal Adolf Eichmann in Buenos Aires in 1960 and his trial and execution in Israel in 1962, as well as the assassination of the Latvian war criminal Herberts Cukurs in Montevideo in 1965, provoked violent attacks by right wing nationalist organizations against Jewish lives and property. Thousands of Jews decided to teach the antisemitic bullies a lesson and make it very clear that shedding Jewish blood would not go unpunished, that Jews were no longer passive victims. The central role that the State of Israel and its envoys played in organizing, instructing, and training self-defense activists highlights the special ties between Israel and the Jewish Diaspora. Based on more than 120 interviews with former activists of self-defense, ex-Mossad officers and veteran Israeli diplomats, as well as on archival research, this is a pioneering study on ethnicity and diaspora in a time of growing political violence in South America. This book is a valuable study for scholars and students researching Jewish history and Latin American history"-- |cProvided by publisher. 546 Translated from the Hebrew. 650 0 Jews |zSouth America |xHistory |y20th century. 650 0 Jews |xViolence against |zSouth America |xHistory |y20th century. 650 0 Antisemitism |zSouth America |xHistory |y20th century. 650 0 Self-defense |zSouth America |xHistory |y20th century. 650 0 Jewish diaspora. 651 0 South America |xEthnic relations. 651 0 South America |xForeign relations |zIsrael. 651 0 Israel |xForeign relations |zSouth America. 650 7 Antisemitism. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst00810769 650 7 Diplomatic relations. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01907412 650 7 Ethnic relations. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst00916005 650 7 Jewish diaspora. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst00982746 650 7 Jews. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst00983135 650 7 Self-defense. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01111577 651 7 Israel. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01204236 651 7 South America. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01244515 650 7 Jews |zSouth America |xHistory |y20th century |2nli 650 7 Jews |xViolence against |zSouth America |xHistory |y20th century. |2nli 650 7 Antisemitism |zSouth America |xHistory |y20th century |2nli 650 7 Self-defense |zSouth America |xHistory |y20th century. |2nli 650 7 Jewish diaspora |2nli 651 7 South America |xEthnic relations |2nli 651 7 South America |xForeign relations |zIsrael |2nli 651 7 Israel |xForeign relations |zSouth America |2nli 648 7 1900-1999 |2fast 655 7 History. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01411628 700 1 Von der Walde, Erna, |etranslator. 776 08 |iOnline version:Rein, Raanan, 1960- |tJewish self-defense in South America |dNew York, NY : Routledge, Taylor & Francis Group, 2023 |z9781003154990 |w(DLC) 2022011848 830 0 Routledge studies in modern history 910 |cG0601mon |d3110-07 |gYBP |h537110 914 (OCoLC)on1315578102 |bOCoLC |cmatch |d20230125 |eprocessed |f1315578102 980 17864232 |i160.00 |j131.20 |n40031475495 982 |cf |q32101118474806 986 |hF2239.J5 |iR45 2023
