Summary note
As an accompanying catalogue to the Tucson Museum of Art exhibition, More Than: Expanding Artist Identities from the American West, this publication includes essays, poetry, and works represented in the exhibition. More Than: Expanding Identities of Artists from the American West examines art through the experiences of the people who created them, the artists. An artist's individuality and perception offer complex, noteworthy, and rich histories frequently overlooked, often representing personal intersections of gender, race, class, sexual preference, ability, location, profession, or other social factors. Focusing on works of art created in the American West, the southwest border, and parts of Canada, a wide net is cast in viewing how artists embrace various parts of themselves and incorporate these identities into their works of art. Focusing on underrepresented artists in art of the American West, this catalogue and exhibition explore ideas of origins of artist identity, intersectionality and its history in art museums, and an expansion of the definition of the art of the American West genre. Also included are poetry by 2019 Tucson Poet Laureate , TC Tolbert, genderqueer feminist, written in conversation with the exhibition themes.
