While medical interventions and treatments did not change significantly from the fourteenth century to the eighteenth century, understandings of where and how plague originated did. Through an innovative reading of medical advice literature produced in England and France, Patterns of Plague explores these changing perceptions across four centuries. When plague appeared in the Mediterranean region in 1348, physicians believed the epidemic's timing and spread could be explained logically and the disease could be successfully treated. This confidence resulted in the widespread and long-term circulation of plague tracts, which described the causes and signs of the disease, offered advice for preventing infection, and recommended therapies in a largely consistent style. What, where, and especially who was blamed for plague outbreaks changed considerably, however, as political, religious, economic, intellectual, medical, and even publication circumstances evolved. Patterns of Plague sheds light on what was consistent about plague thinking and what was idiosyncratic to particular places and times, revealing the many factors that influence how people understand and respond to epidemic disease."-- |cProvided by publisher. 530 Issued also in electronic format. 650 0 Plague |zEngland |xHistory. 650 0 Plague |zEngland |xEpidemiology |xHistory. 650 0 Medical literature |zEngland |xHistory and criticism. 650 0 Plague |zFrance |xHistory. 650 0 Plague |zFrance |xEpidemiology |xHistory. 650 0 Medical literature |zFrance |xHistory and criticism. 650 0 Plague in literature. 650 7 Medical literature. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01014347 650 7 Plague. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01065045 650 7 Plague |xEpidemiology. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01065046 650 7 Plague in literature. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01065063 651 7 England. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01219920 651 7 France. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01204289 655 7 Criticism, interpretation, etc. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01411635 655 7 History. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01411628 776 08 |iOnline version:Jones, Lori (Medical historian) |tPatterns of plague. |dMontreal ; Kingston ; London ; Chicago : McGill-Queen's University Press, 2022 |z0228012988 |z9780228012986 |w(OCoLC)1292553435 830 0 McGill-Queen's/Associated Medical Services studies in the history of medicine, health, and society ; |v59. 902 000088300 |wcopy |120221102132226.0 910 |cC0802mon |d3110-10 |gYBP 914 (OCoLC)on1274199193 |bOCoLC |cmatch |d20230125 |eprocessed |f1274199193 960 |o1 |zUSD 961 |fASP |m311010 |nCloth 980 17669984 |i130.00 982 |cf 984 20220805 |b130706 |cYBP-US
