Alfred places his own laws, dealing with everything from sanctuary to feuding to the theft of bees, between a lengthy translation of legal passages from the Bible and the legislation of the West-Saxon King Ine (r. 688-726), which rival his own in length and scope. This book is the first critical edition of the domboc published in over a century, as well as a new translation. Five introductory chapters offer fresh insights into the laws of Alfred and Ine, considering their backgrounds, their relationship to early medieval legal culture, their manuscript evidence and their reception in later centuries. Rather than a haphazard accumulation of ordinances, the domboc is shown to issue from deep reflection on the nature of law itself, whose effects would permanently alter the development of early English legislation. 530 Also available online. 600 00 Alfred, |cKing of England, |d849-899. |tDōmbōc. 610 20 Corpus Christi College (University of Cambridge). |bLibrary. |kManuscript. |n173 |xHistory. 650 0 Law, Anglo-Saxon. 650 0 Law |zEngland |xHistory |yTo 1500. 650 0 Criminal law |zEngland |xHistory |yTo 1500. 650 0 Civil law |zEngland |xHistory |yTo 1500. 650 0 Law, Medieval. 650 0 Manuscripts, English (Old) |zEngland |zCambridge |xHistory. 650 7 Manuscripts, English (Old) |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01008331 650 7 Law, Medieval. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst00994246 650 7 Criminal law. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst00883328 650 7 Civil law. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst00862544 650 7 Law. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst00993678 650 7 Law, Anglo-Saxon. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst00994168 651 7 England |zCambridge. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01204479 651 7 England. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01219920 648 7 To 1500 |2fast 655 7 History. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01411628 700 02 |iContainer of (expression):Alfred, |cKing of England, |d849-899. |tDōmbōc. |lEnglish. 700 02 |iContainer of (work):Alfred, |cKing of England, |d849-899. |tDōmbōc. |lOld English. 700 1 Oliver, Lisi, |eauthor. 830 0 Studies in legal history 910 |cC0710mon |d3110-10 |gYBP 914 (OCoLC)on1237252124 |bOCoLC |cmatch |d20240710 |eprocessed |f1237252124 960 |o1 |zUSD 961 |fASP |m311010 |nCloth 980 |i99.99 982 |cf 984 20220106 |b090131 |cYBP-US
