Less than 300 lines long, it is among the shortest of the so-called ‘major Homeric Hymns’. However, it is also richly and beautifully conceived and narrated, and of enormous importance for the Greek mythology and the history of Greek religion. Olson offers a complete new text of the poem and of ten related ‘minor Hymns’, based on a fresh examination of the manuscripts; a full critical apparatus; and a translation. The work is completed by a substantial introduction, which treats inter alia the stories of Aeneas, the problem of dating early Greek epic, and the nature of the connections between the Hymn to Aphrodite and the Homeric and Hesiodic poems. Olson furthermore offers a substantial, narratologically-oriented commentary. 504 Includes bibliographical references and index. 505 0 Anchises, Aeneas, and the Aeneidae -- Date of composition -- Poetic affiliations of the Homeric hymn to Aphrodite -- Aphrodite and sexuality -- The metrics of the Homeric hymn to Aphrodite -- Textual transmission -- Critical text and translation: Hymn 5: to Aphrodite -- Hymn 6: to Aphrodite -- Hymn 9: to Artemis -- Hymn 10: to Aphrodite -- Hymn 11: to Athena -- Hymn 12: to Hera -- Hymn 24: to Hestia -- Hymn 27: to Artemis -- Hymn 28: to Athena -- Hymn 29: to Hestia -- Commentary: Hymn 5: to Aphrodite -- Hymn 6: to Aphrodite -- Hymn 9: to Artemis -- Hymn 10: to Aphrodite -- Hymn 11: to Athena -- Hymn 12: to Hera -- Hymn 24: to Hestia -- Hymn 27: to Artemis -- Hymn 28: to Athena -- Hymn 29: to Hestia. 530 Issued also in print. 630 00 Homeric hymns |xCriticism, interpretation, etc. 650 7 LITERARY CRITICISM / Ancient & Classical. |2bisacsh 653 Aphrodite. 653 Greek. 653 Homeric. 653 Hymns. 653 Poetry. 730 02 Homeric hymns. |lGreek. |f2012. 730 02 Homeric hymns. |lEnglish. |f2012. 776 |z3-11-916348-1 776 |z3-11-026072-7 760 0 |tTexte und Kommentare |w(CKB)3390000000063159 830 0 Texte und Kommentare ; |vBd. 39. 906 BOOK
