Summary note

The biography of a leader of Hashomer Hatzair in Poland during the Holocaust and of the Warsaw Jewish underground, and a founder of the Jewish Fighting Organization in the Warsaw ghetto. Kaplan (1913-1942) was born in Kalisz. Vol. 1 deals with the period up to March 1940. Vol. 2 relates that at the beginning of 1940 Kaplan returned from the Soviet-occupied zone to Nazi-occupied Poland to take charge of the Hashomer Hatzair underground movement, and to represent it in the overall Jewish underground institutions. Kaplan took part in the activities of the anti-fascist bloc in Warsaw and, in 1942, in the establishment of the Jewish Fighting Organization. On 3 September 1942 he was caught by the Nazis and executed. Based on archival material found in Israel and on testimonies.
