Summary note
הספר מנתח כמה דגמים מרכזיים של ההגות החרדית שהתמודדה עם השואה בתוך התארעותה
Examines the views of ultra-Orthodox rabbis during the Holocaust. Elhanan Bunim Wasserman, who was murdered by the Nazis in 1941, believed that the Holocaust was a Divine retribution for the sins of many Jews - assimilation, skepticism, Zionism, etc. Yosef Yitzhak Schneersohn, who fled to the USA, agreed with this view and began a movement for repentance, which he believed would bring the redemption. Yissakhar Teichthal, who died during a transport in 1945, changed his ideology and insisted that the Jews of Europe should have all become Zionists and avoided death by emigrating to Eretz-Israel. Kalonymus Shapira, who died in 1944 following his deportation from Warsaw, at first saw the Holocaust as the means for repentance and redemption, but later abandoned his attempt to justify the Holocaust and sought only to sanctify the victims and God, who suffered with them. Discusses, also, responses of some ultra-Orthodox rabbis who did not experience the Holocaust, who basically upheld the views of Wasserman and Schneersohn.
