Summary note
"In an electric confrontation between daughter, boyfriend and father, Tuesday forces its audience to consider the inhumanity of war and the oppression of children by their parents. A sixteen-year-old girl, Irene, sits alone in her bedroom studying for exams. Her soldier boyfriend Brian arrives unexpectedly from active service abroad, struggling under the weight of what he has seen. He has run away from the army barracks, and so when Irene’s father returns from the job centre, he tries to make Brian go back. But what occurs in the small room during the next ninety minutes changes everything for all three of them. Bond writes of violence with anger and with intelligence as Irene leaps towards self-knowledge.Tuesday was first broadcast in 1993 by BBC TV Education, in three weekly parts, but as the play occurs in ‘real time’ it can be staged without divisions."
