הספר חוקר את תולדות הסוגה (הז'אנר) של הפואמה העברית מראשיתה, בשנת 1825 בפואמה "ברוריה" לש' מולדר, ועד סוף העשור השני של המאה העשרים. המחקר מתאר את שלבי התהוותה וצמיחתה הראשונים, עוקב אחר היקלטות מתכונותיה הראשונות ובוחן את התפתחותה והתגונותה.
