Summary note
Analyzes Hebrew plays, mainly those written and produced in Israel between 1954-85. Discusses, also, works in manuscript (never produced), works written during the Holocaust period, and works in other languages. Following an introductory chapter which examines the difficulties of representing the Holocaust in literature, deals with specific themes and examples: collaboration of Jews (e.g. Nathan Shaham's "Heshbon hadash", Moti Lerner's "Kasztner"), child survivors in Israel (Ben-Zion Tomer's "Yaldei ha-tzel"), relations between rescuer and rescued and the survivor's identity (Leah Goldberg's "Ba'alat ha-armon"), reparations payments (Moshe Shamir's "Ha-yoresh", Aharon Megged's "Ha-ona ha-bo'eret"), return to the "valley of death" (Yehuda Amichai's "Pa'amonim ve-rakavot"), resistance and heroism - especially on the Warsaw ghetto uprising and on Hanna Szenes (Yitzhak Sadeh, A. Megged), God vs. Satan or the Jew vs. his enemy (several works). Pp. 93-113 discuss Yehoshua Sobol's "Ghetto".
