The essay volume deals also with the falling into pieces of the long-sought and never-secured unity of art and ornament that marks out the entrance of modernity. Contributors to the volume treat these ill-defined aspects of the separation-process which juts forth into postmodernism. The essays, ranging from Owen Jones to Ernst Gombrich through Gottfried Semper, Alois Riegl, August Schmarsow, Wilhelm Worringer, Adolf Loos, Henry van de Velde, and Hermann Muthesius, show how artistic theories are deeply related to the art practice of their own times, and how ornament lends itself to probe historical transformations. 650 0 Decoration and ornament |xHistory. |0http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2008102123 650 0 Decoration and ornament |xPsychological aspects. 650 0 Decoration and ornament |xSocial aspects. 650 0 Modernism (Art) |0http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85086445 650 7 Decoration and ornament |xPsychological aspects. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst00889200 650 7 Decoration and ornament. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst00889145 650 7 Modernism (Art) |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01024442 655 7 History. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01411628 700 1 Vandi, Loretta, |eauthor. |4edt, |0http://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n2002115104 776 08 |iPrint version: |tOrnament and European modernism. |dBasingstoke : Taylor & Francis, 2017 |z9781138743403 |z1138743402 |w(OCoLC)975368637 830 0 Routledge research in art history
