Criticism and interpretation
Mariano Arana, architect and politician, (former Minister of Housing, Spatial Planning and Environment of Uruguay and former mayor of Montevideo.) is a fervent defender of Montevideo's cultural heritage. He was one of those who dared to raise, in the midst of dictatorship, a critical look at devastating urban policies. When he talks about the city where he was born, as a technician and also as a walker who toured it a thousand times, he seems to dialogue with her. This book concretes a dream long desired by Editions of the Oriental Band: to walk with Arana to witness that dialogue that he has with Montevideo since he was a child. He is accompanied in this adventure by the camera of photographer Carlos Contrera and the writing of Horacio Cavallo. "Arana. Passion for Montevideo" is not a guide, but an account of the memory of the city in some of its enclaves, both in its monumentality and in the alleys of humble neighborhoods; a journey to understand buildings, squares and streets, and especially to the people, us, who transit it and enjoy it. It is an account of the hand of someone who wants, respects and imagines every corner of Montevideo. "Mariano Arana, in addition to his intense university and political career, was also, almost 60 years ago, one of the founders of Ediciones de la Banda Oriental." (HKB Translation) --Page
