Notes
Title from printed catalog.
The anonymous life and miracles of Isabel de France (1225-1270), younger sister of Saint Louis (King Louis IX) (r. 1226-1270), has been attributed to the Franciscan friar Robert Messier [Le Messier] (d. 1546), who was associated with the Franciscan abbey at Longchamp in the 1520s until his death, although it is not listed among his known works.
Script: Bastard Secretary.
Decoration: The main text opens with a 2-line painted gold initial on a red background. Rubrics; alternating blue and red paraph marks; decorative line-fillers.
Binding note
France, 19th century. Bound by the firm of George Trautz (1808-1879) and Antoine Bauzonnet, Paris. Provenance
Princeton MS. 188 was probably produced around 1518 at or for the Franciscan abbey at Longchamp, situated in what is now the Bois de Boulogne, Paris. Intermediate provenance is unknown. In the late 19th century, the manuscript was in the library of Raoul Léonor l'Homme Dieu du Trachant, comte de Lignerolles (1817-1893). The manuscript later passed to Baron Alphonse de Ruble (1831-1898). The manuscript was auctioned at the Hôtel Drouot on 14 December 1990. The Princeton University Library purchased the manuscript from Sandra Hindman (Les Enluminures, Paris, Chicago) (Acc. no. 2005-118).
