Notes
Title from printed catalog.
The treatise De censuris on excommunication was first printed in Venice by Johann of Cologne and Johann Manthen on 23 September 1474 as a portion of Antoninus of Florence, Summa theologica, part III, titles 24-29. The incipit follows a partially unreadable rubric in faded vermilion ink. The text in this manuscript has a variant ending for title 25, different from the variant ending in Claremont, Calif., Honnold/Mudd Library, MS. Crispin 41.
Script: Hybrida libraria. Written entirely by a scribe named Pinyatus Gallicus.
Decoration: Opens on fol. 1r with a white vine-stem initial E in gold against a green background. Subsequent chapters begin with 3- to 4-line blue initials with headings in red.
Binding note
Italy, 17th century (?). Parchment over thin paste-board; sewn on four split leather thongs laced into the boards (but not the parchment covering); paper pastedowns and flyleaves; tie-downs; no endbands; parchment on spine cut to reveal supports.
Provenance
Princeton MS. 149 may have been completed around 1465. The manuscript was in the library of the French medievalist Anatole de Courde de Montaiglon (1824-1895). The manuscript was later owned by the eminent American medievalist Charles Homer Haskins (1870-1937), professor of history at Harvard University. In April 1993, the Princeton University Library purchased the manuscript from the New York antiquarian bookseller E.K. Schreiber.
