Notes
Script: Humanistica antiqua.
Decoration: Book II begins with the rubric “Publii maronis liber 2 incipit,” followed by space for an unexecuted 3-line initial C beginning book II; the missing initial was supplied later as a crude 2-line initial in black ink. The rest of the first word (“Conticuere”) is written in pale red ink by the original scribe. Each line begins with a pale red 1-line initial.
Binding note
Housed in a modern red morocco box.
Provenance
Princeton MS. 123 was written in Italy in the mid-15th century. The manuscript's early and intermediate provenance is unknown. It was in the collection of the American book collector Arthur Houghton, Jr. (1906-1990), whose plate “AHA” is inside the box. The Princeton University Library purchased the manuscript in 1979 at the Christie's, London, sale of Houghton's miniature books.
