France, 18th century. Dark brown calf over paste-board; gilt edges; rebacked, with archaizing gilt stamping and tooling. Sewn on 5 bands; end- bands with no secondary sewing. Spine title (gilt): “HORAE XV CENT.”
Provenance
Princeton MS. 116 was produced for use in the diocese of Toul, in Lorraine, to judge from evidence in the Calendar, Hours of the Virgin, and Office of the Dead. A note on fol. 135r (lifted back paste-down) records the birth in the 15th century of Giles (“Gilet”) on Tuesday, 25 June 1454; he was the son of Robert Loche and wife Meline of Bar, Lorraine. Intermediate provenance is unknown. The manuscript was owned by Archibald Alexander Edward Taylor (1834-1903), Class of 1854, who also attended the Princeton Theological Seminary and was later president of the College of Wooster in Ohio. In 1936 a portion of his collection of printed books and manuscripts was auctioned in New York at the American Art Association-Anderson Galleries. But the present manuscript remained in the possession of his daughter, Lucy Munson Taylor, of Xenia, Ohio, until 1948, when it was acquired by Prof. Alfred Lucien Foulet (1900-1987), of Nasonga Farm, Princeton, Class of 1927. Foulet donated the manuscript to the Princeton University Library in 1976 (AM 21859).
