    Notes
    • Script: Textualis libraria.
    • Decoration: Books III and IV of the Decretalium and the first sermon open with 6- to 8-line initials in red and blue with red and blue penwork decoration and infilling (fols. 1r, 145r, 150v). Subsequent chapters begin with 3- 4-line blue or red initials with penwork of the opposite color. Five small penwork drawings in red and blue on fol. 40v relate to a passage in the chapter “De emptione et venditione.” The drawings depict men providing some form of representation under canon law (oeconomus, procurator, syndicus, tutor, curator, and actor).
    Binding note
England, late 19th or early 20th century. Bound at the London bindery (1842-1947) founded by Joseph Zaehnsdorf (1816-1886).
    Provenance
Princeton MS. 84 is of French origin but unknown early provenance. The manuscript was sold at Sotheby's, London, at a sale beginning on 16 July 1928. The purchaser was the London antiquarian bookseller Maggs Bros. It is unclear when Senator David Aiken Reed (1880-1953), of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Class of 1900, acquired the manuscript, which was no. 5 in his collection. In 1953, his widow Edna French Reed donated the manuscript to the Princeton University Library, where it was accessioned as AM 15461c. A Library bookplate is on the inside front cover.
