Notes
Script: Humanistica antiqua.
Decoration: Each of the three books opens with an ornamental red or blue initial with red and blue penwork decoration, including foliate infilling and flourishes: Q (Quanquam, fol. 1r), Q (Quemadmodum, fol. 124v), and P (Publium Scipionem, fol. 196r). Sections begin with alternating red and blue initial in the left margin. Paraph marks in alternating red and blue.
Binding note
Italy? 16th century. Oak boards (7 mm thick) covered in blind-stamped brown calf, with concentric frames made by the application of tools, a rectangular panel of 8 small square fleurs-de-lis and other floral stamps surrounded by a concentric frame of round Agnus Dei and square floral stamps, separated by multiple fillets.
Provenance
Princeton MS. 68 was probably written in the Veneto but is of unknown early provenance. Previous ownership marks and notes on the flyleaf and fol. 1r, where there may be an early shelf mark (“E70 RUF”), have been erased but are partially legible under ultraviolet light. An early owner's bibliographic description “M.T.C. DE Officiis I” is written at the top of fol. 1r. The manuscript is accompanied by an unattributed dealer's description. Intermediate ownership is unknown. The manuscript was in the collection of Elmer Adler (1884-1962). Adler established and directed the Department of Graphic Arts in the Princeton University Library from 1940 to 1952. The Adler collection was acquired by Princeton University Library between 1945 and 1955.
