Provenance
Kane Ms. 32 was probably produced in Genoa in the mid-15th century. A 5-line dated colophon has been vigorously erased, but a few words are visible under ultraviolet light. The manuscript belonged to Jacobus de Furnareis. His late 15th- or early 16th-century ex libris is on fol. 88r. 539. Intermediate provenance is unknown. It belonged to the French collector Jean Baptiste Joseph Barrois (1785?-1855), from whom it was acquired in 1849 by Bertram, 4th earl of Ashburnham (1797-1878). passed by descent to Bertram, 5th earl of Ashburnham (1840-1913). Ashburnham sold the collection at auction at Sotheby's, London. At the Ashburnham sale, T.W. Greene, Esq., probably the son of the British barrister Thomas Webb Greene (1804-1875), purchased the manuscript. In 1931 the London and New York antiquarian bookseller Wilfrid M. Voynich (1865-1930) sold the manuscript to Grenville Kane (1854-1943), of Tuxedo Park, N.Y. The Kane Collection was acquired by the Princeton University Library from Kane's heirs in February 1946.
