It is a heavily illustrated manuscript that contains only short selections of the text, that instruct the reader about the story depicted. The last picture in the manuscript shows a man kneeling before St. Catherine, identified as Velislav, hence the name of the manuscript. The Bible comprises stories from the Books of Genesis and Exodus, visions of Daniel, and the stories of Samson as well as of Judith. The narrative of the Antichrist precedes the Christological part. The New Testament continues with the Book of Revelation, stories following the Ascension of Christ, and key events from the lives of St. Peter and St. Paul. The manuscript closes with the legend of St. Wenceslas, the patron saint of Bohemia. The essays in The Velislav Bible, Finest Picture-Bible of the Late Middle Ages: Biblia depicta as Devotional, Mnemonic and Study Tool analyze the manuscript from historical, textual, art-historical, and iconographic perspectives. However, a shared concern of all the authors is to think about its functions. An edition of the Latin titulis is being published here for the first time.-- |cPublisher's description. 588 0 Print version record. 600 00 Velislav, |dactive 14th century. |0http://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/nr2003013358 630 00 Bible |vPicture Bibles. |0http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85013701 600 07 Velislav, |dactive 14th century. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01961121 630 07 Bible. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01356024 650 0 Illumination of books and manuscripts, Czech |y14th century. 650 0 Illumination of books and manuscripts, Medieval |zCzech Republic. 650 0 Manuscripts, Latin (Medieval and modern) |zCzech Republic |zPrague |vFacsimiles. 650 0 Illumination of books and manuscripts, Gothic |zCzech Republic. 650 7 Illumination of books and manuscripts, Czech. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst00967277 650 7 Illumination of books and manuscripts, Medieval. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst00967326 650 7 Illumination of books and manuscripts, Gothic. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst00967296 650 7 Manuscripts, Latin (Medieval and modern) |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01008399 651 7 Czech Republic. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01256743 651 7 Czech Republic |zPrague. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01205207 648 7 1300-1399 |2fast 655 7 Facsimiles. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01411642 700 1 Panušková, Lenka |0http://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/no2019017782 700 1 Kernbach, Anna, |d1979- |eeditor, |econtributor. |4edt |4ctb |0http://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/no2011189182 776 08 |iPrint version: |tVelislav Bible, the finest picture Bible of the Late Middle Ages. |dAmsterdam : Amsterdam University Press, [2018] |z9789462980440 |w(OCoLC)1019654977 830 0 Central European medieval studies 910 JSTOR DDA
