This book, unlike most other books on the subject, contrasts two different colonial administrations - first the Chinese Qing Empire, then, from 1895, the Japanese. It shows how , under the Chinese legal system, the Qing employed the Chinese legal system to managed the relationship between the increasing numbers of Han Chinese settlers and the indigenous peoples, and how, although the Qing regime took no and refrained from taking actions to transform aboriginal land tenure, and how nevertheless Chinese settlers were able to manipulate aboriginal land tenure to their advantage. It goes on to examine the very different approach of the Japanese colonial administration, which following the Meiji Restoration of 1868 had begun to adopt a Western legal framework, demonstrating how this was intentionally much more intrusive, and how the Japanese modernized legal framework significantly disrupted aboriginal land tenure. Based on extensive original research, the book provides important insights into colonisation, different legal traditions and the impact of colonial settlement on indigenous peoples"-- |cProvided by publisher. 650 0 Land tenure |xLaw and legislation |zTaiwan |xHistory. 650 0 Land use |xLaw and legislation |zTaiwan |xHistory. 650 0 Land tenure |zTaiwan |xHistory. 650 0 Indigenous peoples |xLand tenure |zTaiwan |xHistory. 650 0 Land settlement |zTaiwan |xHistory. 650 0 Taiwan aborigines |xHistory. |0http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2010115284 650 7 Colonization. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst00868483 650 7 Indigenous peoples |xLand tenure. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst00970244 650 7 Land settlement. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst00991305 650 7 Land tenure. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst00991362 650 7 Land tenure |xLaw and legislation. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst00991383 650 7 Land use |xLaw and legislation. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst00991514 650 7 Taiwan aborigines. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01142133 651 0 Taiwan |xColonization |xHistory. 651 0 China |xColonies |zTaiwan. 651 0 Japan |xColonies |zTaiwan. 651 7 Taiwan. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01207854 655 7 History. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01411628 830 0 Routledge studies in the modern history of Asia (2005) 852 0 |bf |hKNP68.3 |i.Y4 2018 902 kl |bs |6a |7m |dv |f1 |e20190130 904 kl |ba |hm |cb |e20190130 914 (OCoLC)on1051778602 |bOCoLC |cmatch |d20240710 |eprocessed |f1051778602
