Ex copy: From the library of Rev. Alfred L. Baury (1794-1865), Episcopal minister in Newton, MA. Bookplate of Samuel Whitwell, dated 1763. Signatures of Samuel Whitwell Junr, 1772, Isaac Tichenor, Robert Wharry and William Ross. Samuel Whitwell, Jr. (1754-1791) of Boston enrolled at Princeton 1771, BA 1774; helped President Witherspoon bring John Adams to Princeton. Physician in Boston and surgeon in the 3rd Continental Regiment, Massachusetts, 1777-1783. Isaac Tichenor (1754-1838) of Newark enrolled at Princeton in 1773, BA 1775; studied law at Schenecetady; LLD from Dartmouth 1799. Assisted Commissary General of Continental Army at Bennington, 1777; George Washington commended him for the resourcefullness he showed by selling rum to raise revenue for the army; settled in Vermont 1779, Vermont Assembly, 1781-1784, Vermont Senate, 1787-1792, Vermont Supreme Court 1791-1794, Chief Justice, 1795-1796, Governor of Vermont, 1797-1809, U.S. Senator from Vermont, 1796-1797 and 1815-1821, proving himself a staunch abolitionist; retired to Bennington. Robert Wharry (d. 1790), enrolled 1774-1776 in the Class of 1778, but did not graduate. Served Pennsylvania regiments as a surgeon's mate in the Revolutionary War, and later settled in South Carolina, where he was a physician. William Ross enrolled 1774-1775 in the Class of 1778.
