It offers a detailed description of their distribution in Old and Middle English. The subsequent comparison of the forms and uses of the preterite-presents in the two periods allows the author to suggest the reasons for their elimination from the language. The discussion focuses on phonological and morphological changes the verbs underwent as well as on the syntactic structures they appeared in. Yet, the study does not ignore factors of extra-linguistic nature such as genres in which the verbs were frequently found and the potential rivalry with other items of native and foreign origin. 504 Includes bibliographical references and index. 650 0 English language |xHistory. |0http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85043579 650 0 English language |yOld English, ca. 450-1100 |xVerb. |0http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2008119620 650 0 English language |yMiddle English, 1100-1500 |xVerb. |0http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2008119619 650 0 Grammar, Comparative and general |xMorphology. |0http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85056306 650 0 Language obsolescence. |0http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh88003305 650 0 Corpora (Linguistics) |0http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2006006393 650 0 Historical linguistics. |0http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85061192 650 7 Corpora (Linguistics) |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01740921 650 7 English language. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst00910920 650 7 English language |xMiddle English |xVerb. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01711286 650 7 English language |xOld English |xVerb. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01711328 650 7 Grammar, Comparative and general |xMorphology. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst00946202 650 7 Historical linguistics. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst00958134 650 7 Language obsolescence. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst00992396 655 7 History. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01411628 830 0 Studies in English medieval language and literature ; |vBd. 51. 902 jar |bl |6a |7m |dv |f1 |e20180731 904 fb |ba |hm |cb |e20180723 914 (OCoLC)on1003207314 |bOCoLC |cmatch |d20240710 |eprocessed |f1003207314
