Boyle explores the contradictory practices of rehabilitation enacted by women both on and off stage. Pairing historical narratives and archival records with canonical and non-canonical theatrical representations of women's deviance and rehabilitation, Unruly Women argues that women's performances of penitence and punishment should be considered a significant factor in early modern Spanish life. Boyle considers both real-life sites of rehabilitation for women in seventeenth-century Madrid, including a jail and a magdalen house, and women onstage, where she identifies three distinct representations of female deviance: the widow, the vixen, and the murderess. Unruly Women explores these archetypal figures in order to demonstrate the ways a variety of playwrights comment on women's non-normative relationships to the topics of marriage, sex, and violence. 504 Includes bibliographical references and index. 533 Electronic reproduction. |bNew York |nAvailable via World Wide Web. 588 0 Print version record. 655 7 Criticism, interpretation, etc. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01411635 655 7 History. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01411628 650 0 Spanish drama |yClassical period, 1500-1700 |xHistory and criticism. 650 0 Women in literature. 650 0 Women |xInstitutional care |zSpain |xHistory. 650 0 Women |xRehabilitation |zSpain |xHistory. 650 0 Women |zSpain |xSocial conditions |y16th century. 650 0 Women |zSpain |xSocial conditions |y17th century. 650 7 Spanish drama |xClassical period. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01710999 650 7 Women in literature. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01177912 650 7 Women |xInstitutional care. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01176810 650 7 Women |xRehabilitation. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01176907 650 7 Women |xSocial conditions. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01176947 651 7 Spain. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01204303 648 7 1500-1700 |2fast 776 08 |iPrint version:Boyle, Margaret E., 1983- |tUnruly women |z9781442646155 |w(OCoLC)860349375 830 0 Toronto Iberic 910 JSTOR DDA 910 |d3110-55 |gYBP |h330362 956 40 |uhttps://www.jstor.org/stable/10.3138/j.ctt5vkhk3 961 |hJSTUU |iJST |jUU |jUU |kPrinceton permanent acquisition 980 11667312 980 11667312 |i54.00 |j54.00 |n99990934378
