Summary note
Lawyer, corporate executive, and presidential advisor Valerie Bowman Jarrett was born on November 14, 1956 in Shiraz, Iran. Jarrett attended Shaesmith School and the University of Chicago Laboratory School. She graduated from Northfield Mount Hermon School in Massachusetts in 1974. Jarrett received her B.A. degree in psychology from Stanford University in 1978 and her J.D. degree from the University of Michigan Law School in 1981. In 1987, she was deputy corporation counsel for finance and development for the City of Chicago. In 1991, she served as Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley's deputy chief of staff. In 1995, she was appointed chairman of the Chicago Transit Authority. Joining the Habitat Company in 1995, she was named vice president and then president in 2007. In 2003, she was elected chairman of the Chicago Stock Exchange. She was a co-chair of the Obama-Biden Transition Project. In 2009, she joined the Obama administration as senior advisor to the president.
