The fear of domestic extremism has been used to dismantle democracy and erect national security states throughout North America, Western Europe, and beyond. Yet, despite the enormous costs citizens have paid in the name of security, society has become less secure and less safe. In many respects, this situation has resulted from the misapprehension of the conditions that make the emergence of this threat probable. Kowalski focuses on the micro social relations and structures that make radicalization probable. As demonstrated through an analysis of the so-called Toronto 18--an extremist group arrested in June of 2006 for activities that contravened the Canadian Anti-Terrorism Act (ATA)--macro social relations and structures served a significant role in creating the conditions through which the process of radicalization became probable. If a comprehensive understanding of the processes of radicalization are to be reached and effective counter-terrorism policies developed, then the consideration this book provides of greater macro social relations and structures that make the emergence of extremist subjectivities probable is needed."-- |cProvided by publisher. 650 0 Terrorism |zCanada. 650 0 Terrorism |zCanada |xPrevention. 650 0 Terrorism |xReligious aspects |xIslam. |0http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2002003017 650 0 Jihad. |0http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85070535 650 0 Islam and politics |zCanada. 650 0 Terrorism |xPrevention. |0http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh00007517 650 7 Islam and politics. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst00979879 650 7 Jihad. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst00983599 650 7 Terrorism. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01148101 650 7 Terrorism |xPrevention. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01148123 650 7 Terrorism |xReligious aspects |xIslam. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01148138 651 7 Canada. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01204310 776 08 |ionline version: |tDomestic extremism and the case of the Toronto 18. |dNew York : Palgrave Macmillan 2016 |z9781349949601 |w(OCoLC)961006839 758 |ihas work:Islamic domestic extremism in Canada (Text) |1https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PCGkRfTRYwGB9KHPGBMmVyd |4https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/ontology/hasWork 852 0 |bf |hHV6433.C2 |iK69 2016 902 kl |bs |6a |7m |dv |f1 |e20161222 904 kl |ba |hm |cb |e20161222 914 (OCoLC)ocn945949245 |bOCoLC |cmatch |d11172022 |eprocessed |f945949245 916 2024-02-03 |b945949245 |cWorldCat record variable field(s) change: 758 |d10020513 |d99100205133506421 |eWorldShare Record Update 916 2024-02-09 |b945949245 |cWorldCat record variable field(s) change: 758 |d10020513 |d99100205133506421 |eWorldShare Record Update
