    Summary note
In 1931, Luis Muñoz Marín began his political career as one of the most passionate leaders for Puerto Rican independence. In 1937 he was expelled from the party as it moved further away from seeking independence. Soon after Muñoz Marín started his own Partido Popular Democrático, eventually opting for a more gradual shift to autonomy. This volume discusses these key events in the history of Puerto Rico and its relations with the United States.
