Summary note
Anthology of the new music, containing texts collected from various masters in the art of the old music who transcribed the chants according to the new musical notation, for the praise of God, of Jesus Christ and His Most Holy Mother and of His saints. Among the poets and composers named are: Iōannēs ho Koukouzelēs, kyr Kallinikos hieromonachos, Chourmouzios ho Chartophylax, Geōrgios ho Krēs, kyr Iōsaph hieromonachos, Iakōvos Prōtopsaltēs, Iōannēs Prōtopsaltēs, kyr Anastasios, Grēgorios ho Lampadarios, Daniēl Prōtopsaltēs, Petros Peloponnēsios ho Lampadarios, Vasarios hieromonachos, Meletios Sinaitēs, Vēssariōn hieromonachos, and Chrysathos ho Lampadarios. According to the inscription on the title page written in Romanian (Cyrillic script), the manuscript was transcribed during the reign of our Lord, His Highness Emperor Nicholas Pavlovič (r. 1825-1855) of all Russia, Moldavia, Bessarabia (Rom.: Basarabia, i.e., the Eastern part of Moldavia annexed by Russia in 1812) and Wallachia and during the pontificate of Metropolitan Veniamin Costache of all Moldavia (1803-1808; 1812 -1842), in June 1831. On verso, inscription of ownership informs us that the book was brought by a certain Gheorghe Costenescu in 1855, in exchange of 37 lei.

  • Physical description: 15 single lines per page; two elaborate headpieces, numerous large initial letters with floral design in red ink; title page arranged in a floral frame; folio 242r is written by another hand. A content list on pages [ii-iii]. A stamp with an image of Saint George on folio 1r; foliation up to folio 49 in Greek numerals, while folia 50-244 follow the numeral system by the hand of the scribe. Later inscriptions in Modern Greek in blue pen on front paste-down, p. [iii] and fol.1 from former owners (1978).

Contemporary leather slightly worn; blind-tooled borders on covers; edges gilt and gaufered.
