Summary note
The suite consists of a title page and six prints reproducing the four corners and two side portions of the ceiling. Each print includes several lines of explanatory text engraved in calligraphy by Claude-Auguste Berey. The text identifies the allegorical figures and emblems representing the four continents of Asia, America, Europe, and Africa, the allegorical representations of months, virtues, and arts, and the mythological figures of Apollo and the muses Clio, Polymnie [Polyhymnia], and Melpomene.
Notes
The signatures of the engravers are present in the print depicting the side portion of the ceiling with the pedestal or tripod of Apollo and the muses Clio and Melpomene: "Step. Baudet sc." and "C. Berey scrip".
Dated 1679-1683 (cf. Saur).
SAX copy: Bound with 15 plates, also double-leaf. The first depicts the Escalier des Ambassadeurs at Versailles. Others show the vault of the Galerie du petit apparetement du Roy, the coupola of the chapel of Sceaux, and the coupola of Val-de-Grâce. Two are dated 1681. A number were engraved and/or sold by Audran. Some paintings were by Mignard.
