Summary note

Consists of two parts: the first part, which is the shortest contains a letter at the beginning of the book to Ieremias II, Patriarch of Constantinople, written by Maximos, the bishop of Kythēra: "Tō panagiōtatō archiepiskopō kōnstantinoupoleōs kai oikou / menikō patriarchē kyriō kyriō, / hieremia, maximos ta / peinos Episkopos / kythērōn makariōs / apalla / ttein". Included also is a letter from the Abbot of the Monastery of Raitho, John, to St. John of the Ladder, as well as a speech at the end of the book "on the pastor," which highlights the ideal features that should adorn a pastor and teachers of the Church. The second part of the manuscript consists of thirty chapters, a treatise, which is known as "Ladder of Divine Ascent" and describes the spiritual reasons and tips for an ascetic life.

Collation: [1]4 [2]4 [3]7 [4]-[31]8 [32]11: [8] + σμβ' [=242] ff. (lacking 2 leaves from the first and 2 from the second quire, a few wormholes to the margins of some leaves, waterstains). Colophon at the end refers to the scribe's name and date of the manuscript: "theou to dōron, kai ponos leontiou / epi etous sōtērion axle kai / hoi anaginōskontes, euxasthai dia / ton kyrion. kai ta sphalenta / diorthōsasthai heneken tēs / agapēs christou tou / theou hēmōn / noemvriō ka - / eilēphe terma -." Foliation by another hand, without signatures; marginal notes.

Bound in contemporary goatskin over wooden boards; worn, first and last leaves loose; sewn on four raised bands.
