Summary note
A hand-assembled book composed of proof sheets and enlarged photographic images, articles, clippings, and a text written and signed by the artist. The book documents the construction of the Five car stud tableau from its inception to its installation at Gemini G.E.L. for the purpose of creating the Sawdy multiple.
Notes
"The work debuted at Documenta V in Kassel, Germany in 1972, and shortly thereafter was acquired by the Kawamura Memorial Museum of Art in Sakura, Japan, where it remained in storage for more than 35 years. In 2009 Nancy Reddin Kienholz, the artist's wife and collaborator, announced that the work [had] been restored in advance of an upcoming tour and exhibition in the United States and Europe." -- bookseller's description.
Edition limited to 103 copies: 55 signed and numbered; 44 signed, unnumbered; 3 artist's copies; 1 "A" prototype.
