    Summary note
    "Captain's Reports" ledger of the British financed Imperial Brazilan Mining Company for its Gongo Soco mine in mining state of Minas Gerais, Brazil, containing entries dated from 10 November 1840 through 2 April 1844. The copies of reports vary in length and detail (and hand); subjects include amount of gold mined with its source, mining operations, plans, prospects, opening "rises," the driving of a "tram level," "cross cut," draining, sites reported on, trials, extensive response to attack on the mining company, abuse of slaves, life at the mine for male and female slaves as well as English (Cornish) miners, dangers to health, limbs, and life, repairs, potential, European miners, timber, hiring, annual payments to "a black" (about £6) and to a European (£84 plus travel), a detailed report (part historical) on the "present state of the mine" commencing with the method the Baron of Catas Atlas started using by "washing away the auriferous . . . main vein . . . etc.," and so on--documenting the nature and organization of a significant gold mine at its peak. Many of the reports are addressed to George Vincent Duval, Chief Commissioner. Bound in marbled boards, [189 pp.], half-leather, very worn.
