First edition of the French text with a parallel translation, and the first literary English translation on which all others were based until the early 19th century.
This translation first published by Joseph Pote and Richard Montagu, London, 1729.
Parallel text in English and French; French title page reads "Histoires, ou contes du tems passe : avec de moralitez / Par M. Perrault ; augmentée d'une nouvelle, viz. L'Adroite Princesse. Troisieme edition."
"The discreet princess" (Adroite princesse) is by Marie-Jeanne l'Héritier de Villandon.
French dedication by P. Darmancour to "Mademoiselle, de vôtre altesse royale"; English dedication by Robert Samber to Gace Granville, 1st Countess Granville.
Engraved frontispiece with title set into illustration: "Mother Goose's Tales."
Illustrations, in duplicate, at the parallel openings of the stories; woodcut tail-pieces and ornamented typographical fleurons for initial capitals.
