Notes
"Second (American) issue of the First Edition," an issue of 1,000 copies of Macmillan's original, 1st Ed., which had been rejected by Tenniel, bound in Eng. with the new Appleton t.p. added (cf. Williams).
Half t.p. line-breaks: "Alice's / Adventures In Wonderland" (cf. the Macmillan 1866 t.p.).
Illustrations: Wood-engraved frontispiece and illustrations throughout the text, signed by Tenniel (with his stylized monogram) and by Dalziel; letterpress tailpiece decorations, using asterisks, at the end of some chapters and sections.
Princeton copy 1: T.p. cancel is the "first" of "two slightly different" Appleton variations, resulting from the cancels being printed in pairs, with the "b" in "by" above and slightly to the right of the "T" in Tenniel's name (cf. Taylor).
Princeton copy 2: T.p. cancel is the "second"of "two slightly different" Appleton variations, with the "b" in "by" directly above the "T" in Tenniel's name (cf. Taylor).
Princeton copy 1: Inscribed at head of half-title: "Christmas, 1867."
Princeton copy 2: Inscibed on half-title: "Emily- Pleasure is a necessary ... July 12. 1868."
Princeton copy 3: Variant 1 of the t.p.; Variant "A" of the second preliminary gathering. Dark red smooth cloth, blocked in gold as the 1866 English edition. A.e.g. Black endpapers.
Binding note
Princeton copy 1: Pub. red cloth, gilt-ruled and gilt-stamped on both covers and gilt-stamped on spine with title, publisher, and small ornament (the latter unlike Macmillan's 1st ed.); dark teal endpapers (as in the original 1st ed.); all edges gilt.
Princeton copy 1: Vol. within later red cloth clamshell box.
Princeton copy 2: Black half-morocco, with title stamped in gilt on spine with raised bands; marbled fore-edge; pages trimmed to 19 cm. and 2 blank leaves, including endpapers, added at beginning and end of text block during rebinding.
