Summary note
A scrapbook regarding British Army officer Brigadier-General Charles Robert Cureton (1789-1848). Most notably, the volume includes a neat copy of Cureton's unpublished diary entries documenting his journey to Lahore to escort the commander-in-chief in India, Sir Henry Fane, to the marriage of Maharaja Ranjit Singh's grandson in 1837. Entitled "A journal of Colonel Curetons of a march from Murat towards Lahore with the escort of the commander in chief Sir Henry Fane G.C.B. &c." it details Cureton's journey and encounters with Ranjit Singh and his court.
Aside from Cureton's journal, the volume includes a few letters and letter fragments related to Cureton and his son, Edward Burgoyne Cureton (1822-1894), as well as several newspaper clippings documenting campaigns in which Charles Robert Cureton participated as well as his career and death. Letters include one from J. MacDonald to Ensign E.B. Cureton dated June 27, 1839, regarding his joining the 13th regiment of foot; a fragment of a letter dated September 28, 1838 to 'Dear Cousin', perhaps by E.B. Cureton; and fragments of letters/signatures from Charles Robert Cureton to John Atcherley.
Notes
According to the dealer description, the manuscript portion of the scrapbook is "a neat copy apparently taken from the original journal by John Bainbridge of the 55th (Westmorland) Regiment of Foot, whose name appears on the title-page beneath a newspaper cutting."
