Notes
  • Rehearsal score? Steklograph reproduced from copyist ms.
  • Explicit at end of each act, dated 1933.
  • Libretto by the composer and Alexander Preis, after the short story by Nikolay Leskov. Cf. New Grove Opera.
  • This rehearsal vocal score of Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk (Mzensk) District was published months before the dual premieres (Leningrad and Moscow) in January 1934, and provides an intensely valuable record of the opera's evolution. The score documents a hitherto under-researched stage of one of the most famous instances of an artist struggling to produce politically viable art in the Stalinist Soviet Union and misjudging the labile boundaries of officially tolerated aesthetic sensibilities.
