Summary note
"This book is written to gain the attention and respect of several constituencies associated with higher education. First are those who are new to the field, whether as professionals and/or as graduate students. As such, this audience has substantial overlap with the membership of the Association for the Study of Higher Education (ASHE) and such professional groups as NASPA, the group for student affairs professionals in higher education. Second are faculty, staff, trustees, and those in academic leadership roles such as presidents, provosts, and deans. Top administrators, no matter how busy with daily demands, can gain from good reading about the institutions in which they work and lead. Third, this book is intended to be useful to those outside colleges and universities -- such as policy analysts, state and federal government officials, congressional staff, legislators, foundation leaders, and members of the business community. Fourth, this book is meant to provide a readable introduction for those whose professional work is in higher education outside the United States. American colleges and universities are distinctive -- but they also are peculiar. Our policies, programs, and practices are not always self-evident in their logic and design"--Preface.
