Summary note:
A wide panorama on the cinema theaters in the city of São Paulo since the silent cinema. Through the documentation preserved by the historical archives of São Paulo (AHSP-SMC/PMSP), one of the city's main historical collections, the author reconstructs a significant moment in the history of cinema and urban memory in 20th century, marked by the presence of the "street cinema". In this edition, which extends the studies of his previous book "Imagens do passado: São Paulo e Rio de Janeiro nos primórdios do cinema" (Senac São Paulo, 2004), the author recovers the rich document collection of the AHSP with design plans of specially built cinemas or adaptations to older buildings to house new cinema theaters, reproducing facades, floor plan and elevations, as well as other records from various collections, such as ads in the press, photographs and postcards. Jose Inacio de Mello Souza, one of the most dedicated researchers in the history of cinema in Brazil, highlights little-known documents, outlining a renewed perspective on this complex moment of introduction of cinema in São Paulo and the establishment of a distribution circuit and display space of socialization privileged of modernity.
