        Summary note
Fifty years after his death Thomas Hardy's status as one of the very greatest of English writers, both as novelist and poet, is indisputable. It is remarkable, therefore, that among the flood of critical and biographical works which his writings have led to there has been so little examination of his texts. The need to present, with all possible accuracy and completeness, what the writer actually wrote is so indispensable a part of our understanding, and provides so valuable an insight into the creative mind at work, that it must be the hope of all those who admire Hardy's writing that what Professor R.L. Purdy did for Hardy bibliographical studies in the 1950s will be done for Hardy textual studies in the next decade. This variorum edition of the Complete Poems is a first contribution to those studies. -- Introduction.
